RedLine’s 10x – 10th Anniversary

On Friday, February 2, RedLine opened 10x, an exhibition celebrating 10 years of their Artist-in-Residence Program. Among the 86 presenting artists, Laura Merage, founder of RedLine, exhibited her large-scale installation “Nausy Nauzy”. Laura used felt to cover foam pillows, chairs, poofs, and other various shapes in a variety of colors. Michael Paglia from Westword interviewed Laura and provided a deeper dive into the exhibition.
“…it’s meant to provide comfort in uncomfortable times.”
Laura Merage, Artist & Philanthropist
Viewers can lounge on the colorful pillows, sit on the chairs and poofs, and re-arrange them as they please.
Laura founded RedLine in 2008 after noticing that many of her fellow artists were being displaced due to gentrification. As a way to mitigate this problem, Laura established RedLine Contemporary Art Center, focused on nurturing the education and engagement between artists and communities to bring about positive social change. Laura began RedLine as an “art incubator,” with space for both displaying and creating art. While the success of the organization has proven otherwise, there were doubts and uncertainties during the beginning stages of the organization.
RedLine’s 10x: 10th anniversary program series will honor and reflect on the relationships that have been fostered over the past 10 years, as well as the many obstacles the organization and its stakeholders have overcome. The exhibition was curated by Cortney Lane Stell, Executive Director and Chief Curator of Black Cube. Black Cube, also founded by Laura Merage, was established in 2015 as a nomadic art museum with a focus on artists’ self-sufficiency and increasing access to contemporary art.
With so many artists exhibiting, Stell had to create a movable wall that sits diagonally through RedLine’s main space, creating more area to display all of the 10x artworks. On opening night, the exhibition space became very crowded with more 1,000 people walking about to view the artworks. The exhibition will be open until April 1 and is free to the public. Following the closing of this exhibition, RedLine will be hosting their 10x EPIC Gala on April 19.
